First stage of Franz Josef Flood Protection has officially opened

Regional Development Minister Shane Jones officially opened Stage 1 of the Franz Josef Flood Protection Scheme on a bright and cold West Coast Friday morning.

This is part of the Waiho River Protection Scheme programme of works at Franz Josef involves construction of a new link bank, raising the height of the existing north side stop banks and ongoing management of the Waiho River for the long-term. This major regional infrastructure project enhances the resilience and safety of the township, state highway and critical infrastructure.

The Stage 1 works cost $12.3 million with support of $9.2 million in Crown funding. The project was made possible through a collaborative effort; most notably the support of regional development funds, and local community which has contributed both financially and through ongoing engagement. Stage 2 works on the South side stop banks of the Waiho have been procured and are due to commence. We’re working with West Coast Regional on Flood Protection works at multiple locations on the West Coast – including Franz Josef, Hokitika and Greymouth.
