Te Ara Ātea achieves Excellence at Property Industry Awards
We are incredibly proud to have been involved in the delivery of Te Ara Ātea, an outstanding community space and anchor landmark building for the Rolleston Town Centre.
This latest recognition at the Property Industry Awards adds to several New Zealand accolades for this stunning building. These awards include, among others, the Designers Institute of New Zealand Best Design Awards Gold Pin and the New Zealand Institute of Architects National Awards – Interior. The project team has also been shortlisted for the Property People Awards 2023.
Te Ara Ātea is designed to be the manawa or heart of Rolleston's town centre. The building consists of two stories and 2200 square metres. With a visually striking exterior, Te Ara Ātea hosts the town's library along with art and museum spaces, workshops, meeting rooms and a dedicated performance space. These are connected via a fluid double-height atrium. The centrally located Te Waka Huia provides display, research and reflection space. The interior is intentionally playful, rich and multi-layered, encouraging a sense of delight and discovery.
From the beginning, the project team worked hard to combine community needs with cultural heritage. Key partner Te Taumutu Rūnanga gifted the project the story of Tū Te Rakwhānoa, which tells of the the competing forces which formed the Rakaia Gorge and the braided river. These themes were incorporated throughout the design of Te Ara Ātea.
The building and landscape was designed by architects Warren and Mahoney, and cost $22.7 million to construct. Inovo’s role included designmanagement and project management for Te Ara Ātea and more broadly the development of the town centre master plan, incorporating and coordinating the design of the health hub, civic buildings, community facilities and a Council service centre together with all of the associated infrastructure in support of the developments.
Te Ara Ātea was very much a work of collaboration between Inovo, the owner/developer Selwyn District Council, the architects Warren and Mahoney and other specialists. Construction by Armitage Williams, Service, Mechanical and Structural Engineer was TM Consultants, Building Enclosure Engineer was Kaison, Quality Surveyor was AECOM and other consultancy services provided by Workshop e and Acoustic Engineering Services.
