Project Management
Inovo is providing Planning and Project Controls services for the multi-billion infrastructure development programme designed to revitalise Auckland International Airport over a decade.
The Airport engaged Inovo to provide project planning and project control services, including schedules, key constraints and construction sequencing; staged scope definition; risk identification; physical delivery strategies and integrated planning services for the delivery of their portfolio of capital works programme.
Some of the infrastructure projects planned for delivery at Auckland Airport
include:
- An integrated domestic and international terminal
- Expanding the border processing area and public arrivals space
- Upgrading the international check-in area
- Improvements to public transport, roading and pedestrian walkways
- Airfield developments
NORTHERN NETWORK
The multi-million-dollar Northern Network project intends to transform the main entranceway into the airport, increase roading capacity and efficiencies and provide critical support for new public transport connections. The main road into the airport from the north will be widened to create high occupancy vehicle lanes, with shared pedestrian and cyclepaths alongside. A new one-way loop road will be built, allowing traffic to flow efficiently through a pick-up/drop-off zone at the international terminal.
SOUTHERN NETWORK
This group of projects is designed to improve Auckland Airport’s transport links from the south. The Laurence Stevens Drive upgrade will create a high-occupancy vehicle lane for shuttles and buses and additional bus stops, improving journey-time reliability to the airport precinct and terminals. Other projects include upgrades to Prices Road and Pukaki Bridge, a new Park and Ride, and high-occupancy lanes on State Highway 20/Puhunui Road.
AIRFIELD DEVELOPMENTS
257,000m2 of land will be converted into airfield, creating a dual taxiway to Pier B, which will improve the efficiency of aircraft movement to and from the runway, and six new ‘remote’ stands.
DOMESTIC TERMINAL REDEVELOPMENT
The Domestic Jet Facility is a new domestic terminal replacing the existing 53-year-old building. The new facility will be joined onto the existing international terminal and will cut out the current ten-minute walk or shuttle ride to the international terminal for connecting passengers.
INTERNATIONAL ARRIVALS
This project will add 30,000m2 of floor space to the current footprint of the international terminal, bringing a significant increase in space for border processing, retail, public dwell and back of house areas. The site will extend from the western end of the international terminal and connect into the existing building. A new forecourt area providing an easy connection through to pick-up zones for taxis, shuttles and other transport operators will be built adjoining the extension.
Inovo utilises a broad knowledge base and skillset to work with the Airport’s stakeholders on the integration of projects making up the $5 billion capital works programme. Communication underpins Inovo’s ability to provide advice that considers operations, cost, buildability and demand when prioritising and integrating this complex programme of works.
Inovo’s extensive planning capabilities ensure that planning and monitoring across the portfolio are maintained to a high standard and supports governance board reporting and engagement.
FLOOD REMEDIATION
Inovo was also engaged to manage the urgent remediation of extensive damage caused to the International Terminal by the 2023 Auckland floods, which temporarily closed the terminal to all flights. This entailed the testing and replacement of large areas of floor and wall finishes, doors, fixed furniture, bathroom amenities, lifts and escalators, and specialised check-in and baggage-handling equipment.
