Skyline Queenstown

This project is the largest private investment in the tourism sector in New Zealand. The development has five key stages with construction forecast to span over a 7-year period.

Stages 1 and 2 represented the full replacement of the existing renewed Queenstown gondola system which has operated for 36 years. This included the replacement of both the top & bottom terminals where new buildings were partially built over the top of the existing system.  This required shut down for two months to allow for demolition of the old terminals and towers, and a full system change over.  The project was completed a day ahead of schedule in July 2023.

Stage 3 of the project is a four-level carpark building, built into the cliffside of Bob’s Peak. Site preparation required removal of over 44,000 cubic meters of rock.

Stage 4 is part of a new building on top of Bobs Peak over two stages – firstly, a self-contained section of the main complex to allow customers to enjoy the Skyline views while the existing Main Complex is demolished. After this demolition Stage 5 will commence which is the most complex section of the project, residing between the operational Stage 4 building and the Top Gondola Terminal. Stage 4 & 5 will then be fused together to complete the entire replacement of one of New Zealand’s most visited & iconic attractions. The location of the build and allowing the business to remain fully operational are the primary factors that have demanded skilled planning on top of managing ‘out of the ordinary’ challenges to construction.

Within the Project Planning scope of works, Inovo has been instrumental with estimation and monitoring of the project time, in coordination of works between key subcontractors and providing visibility of the project critical path. The team has found practical solutions to maintain time targets, working around challenges such as inclement weather events and has reworked the project plan to cope with a volatile procurement market for materials.

Inovo has helped to prioritise critical works throughout the life of the project within what has been, and continues to be, a dynamic work environment.
